The terms “chatting” and “messaging” refer broadly to technologies that allow individuals to interact remotely in real-time. These are synchronous communication methods that allow people to carry on remote conversations, primarily via typed text.
Under this somewhat broad umbrella fall a number of specific mechanisms, including chat rooms, instant messaging, text messaging (aka “texting”), and audio/video chat. Chatting and messaging are primarily textual communication methods, although audio and video features are increasingly common.
In this chapter we take a tour through these technologies in order to better understand the benefits and the risks.
